I'm a big fan of Spitfire Audio, and in particular their "String Quartet by Spitfire Audio" pack for Ableton Live. I recently tried applying their Short Staccato patch to a piece I wrote years ago, link is below. For me, this is the best staccato string articulation I've ever heard. Now, if only someone would bring out a really good sax vst...

Regarding the saxophone, I am not really happy with my Kontakt samples either, but this one kind of suits the piece.
