Midi clock delay problem

Hi,
I am triggering a hardware synth via a midi clip in ableton, but its out of sync. But no matter how much i change the 'midi clock sync delay' in abletons prefs, it doesn't change at all.
Normally if i change that it sorts it out but its not doing it.
I am direct monitoring my synths through my interface, monitor is set to 'off' on the tracks in Live.
If i line up the midi note bang on the beat, it records in EARLY by quite a few miliseconds.
When i record my drum maachines with no midi, they record in just fine and in time.
Any ideas why this is happening?
