Why did my 're-enable automation' button turn off/stop working? And how do I get automation to work again?

Hi there-
So whoops goes the automation button. The one with the left facing arrow that turns orange when it turns on. You know it- well now it is stuck on grey. And I saw it happen, but I don't know why it happened. Any ideas? Thank you-
