Failed to open audio device on restart

G'day. I'm running the following;
Ableton Lite Suite 10.1.40 on an AMD 1920x with a Behringer UMC404HD.
I'm able to get the driver to work, but it feels like a casino game. When I restart (as you do...) I'm met with the lovely "Failed to Open Audio Device - X". It doesn't matter which audio device, nor the settings. Normally I'm using the UMC ASIO driver, but I'll use the Realtek MME or ASIO4ALL (latest versions) when troubleshooting.
When 'normal' problems arise, I will open Preferences and switch the Type to MME/DirectX and play the test tone. Then switching back to the ASIO-UMC driver will click audibly twice (connectivity check I guess) and play beautifully. When it's not normal (just now) I end up in an odyssey of trying settings until Live 'decides' it's ready to work with me and loads the driver successfully.
While a patient sort, this is becoming a joke. I'm open to trying things, but I've gone so far as to uninstall and reinstall each driver with no effect to the problem. Mic privacy settings are all checked 'Allow'.
Any ideas? My sincere thanks.
