Flattening midi clips... a question.

Hello all!
Regarding midi clips in Ableton Live 11, why does the "freeze & flatten" operation on a midi clip change the "Audio From" routing on the pertinent channel from "No Input" to "Ext. In 1/2"?
I've been using Live for a long time and for the life of me I can't recall if "freeze & flatten" automatically changed this routing in previous versions. I don't believe it did, but can't remember for sure. And if it has always changed the "Audio From" routing, what is the purpose?
Is this a feature that can be turned off? I don't want any routing changed when flattening a midi clip.
