I want to use ableton live in a similar fashion to a hardware looper. (using Novation Launchpad mini btw).

1. arm the first clip, ideally from the launchpad (this is usually a drum track)
2. start recording... no click track, then press again to have it continue looping
3. system should determine tempo and measures like a hardware looper.
4. continue arming and recording other clips, ideally without going to the keyboard
system should use the 1st recorded clip for the session tempo and measures.

how can I do this?

There's a "Tempo Control" setting in Looper, use the "set and follow song tempo".
