Live5.01 decodes mp3s with glitches (frequently)

I'm having a worrying problem with mp3s. Sometimes the wav which ableton decodes will have a (fairly sizeable perhaps a 32th or so) glitch. I can delete the wav from the decoding cache and the next time round it may render perfectly.
This is very worrying as if I have an mp3 clip perfectly warped out and open up a set using this audiofile, it may decode with a glitch therefore putting all my warping out by the size of the glitch for the rest of the track.
This is happening fairly fequency and to such an extent that I daren't risk letting ableton decode mp3s for fear of embarrasing live experiences. I am going back to the old way of converting mp3 to wav by hand for now.
An unrelated prob is that I'm getting erratic cpu spikes, usually on track starts or on muting and unmuting a track (I've trashed the prefs).
