Does Ableton Live support playback of imported audio files?

Pardon the seemingly silly question, but does AL support playback of imported audio files? Any WAV or MP3 file I drop into a track plays back with a degraded sound quality. The files play back fine in other apps. Has anyone experienced this problem and found a solution?
