I'm in the lazy habit of having audio playing most of the time when loading an audio plug or synth. Should I not be doing that?
Would launching plugs with audio running be more apt to confuse the hell out of a daw and be more likely to cause crashes?

You might get a small break in the audio while doing it if Live is playing, but it's not going to make things more likely to crash. Totally fine to do it.
