Which MacBook?

Post by Andyroo66 » Fri Mar 04, 2022 9:24 am

Hi
Due to USB instability I need to upgrade from my HP Windows Laptop to a Macbook
Budget is about £1.2K
DAW is Ableton Live 11
Which one?
refurb or new?
Ive read somewhere that the new M1 powered Macs are crashing with Ableton

Thanks
Andy

Hi Andy, I have a 2020 M1 MBP and it works brilliantly, particularly with Live 11 now it's native. There can be some CPU spikes, especially with (my handmade/botched M4L devices), but day-to-day performance is great. Only downside is having just two USB ports and some hubs can be temperamental (Anker seem to be fine though).

thanks, 2 USB ports sounds a bit minimal if I'm going to shell out

Not sure if this is too late....USB ports always seem in short supply when music making.

I've got a Sabrent 10 port USB hub and it's been fantastic in the 2 years I've owned it. https://www.amazon.com/Sabrent-10-Port- ... s9dHJ1ZQ==

I’ve got the same model hub that Shift Gorden posted, in a 7 port model. It works well and hasn’t failed me in any way. The ability to turn individual ports on/off were the selling point for me. No regrets
