Is the drum loop MIDI or audio?

You can build a loop out of either, but it depends on whether you're recording it on an audio track or a MIDI track in Ableton.

You can record both MIDI and audio. You can turn MIDI into an audio track. You can loop either MIDI or audio. That's why it's very hard to figure out what the problem is because I think the problem is you need to first watch some of the great YouTube intro videos to Ableton so you can get a better feel for what you want to do and better explain any problems you might run into.

I've watched quite a few intros on Ableton and have become quite comfortable using it. the only issue so far I've ran into is when i loop a drum track i manage to get it to loop but every time it loops over the volume of said track becomes noticeably more quiet after each play.
