how to record bass (or guitar) properly

I'm using a Scarlett solo interface 3rd gen and trying to record on Ableton Live 11 just with my bass or guitar and I wonder: should I use a amp between my instrument and interface? Even with the INST button on the quality is not high enough. I'm new to all this recording knowledge
