To properly split it into two mono (L and R) files you need to do it outside of Live as Live doesn't offer this option.
If you don't mind it being a stereo file then you can use Utility to only listen to the L or R side.

I have SOLVED this problem in hardware.

My RME Fireface UFX (and TotalMix FX software) have a Loopback fuction ..

this allows me to take the LEFT out of a Stereo Wav (1) in Ableton (a stereo track panned to the LEFT ) as INPUT to 3
and allows me to take the RIGHT out of a Stereo Wav (2) (on a duplicate Ableton track panned to the RIGHT ) as INPUT to 4

now have have 2 tracks in ableton live with 3 as the LEFt and 4 as the RIGHT and I can edit them separately which was the goal.

What a convoluted solution!

not really, it just a button press and set the panning as you'd have to do in any case

I think what he means is you don't have to route outside Live, you could just duplicate the track with the stereo file and use Utility - or route within Live and use Utility - the external loopback is superfluous (and adds a full duplex worth of latency).

It's still bloody convoluted, mind you . . . just slightly less sub-optimal.
