How to stop new lane from automatically going to main track?

I'm recording single instruments with multiple takes. Each time I do a new take, Ableton automatically inserts it into the main lane.
I don't want the new takes inserted automatically. I'm just looking to take parts of the new takes I like and insert them manually. As it is, each time Ableton automatically inserts the entire new take, I have to manually switch it back to the original before I can decide what parts I'd like to insert or not insert.
I can't find an option to stop that behavior. There's got to be a option to stop this, I don't know why anyone would want it to insert the whole new take every time. It defeats the point of doing multiple takes to use riffs or bars that you like manually.
