I've installed audacity and it's says it can't read my sample. Is there a recommended sample editor to use?

Depends on what you need to do.

Alot of sample editing can be done right in Ableton but Audacity is usually what others use but there are a few other free ones but DAWS could also be used such as Reaper, Pro Tools. But there are also high end Sample editors like Sound Forge, and Adobe Audition.
Some of those might be as expensive as a new DAW.

Some also use things like Melodyne for pitch/time correction or izotope rx.

I used to use Sound Forge in the 2000s but I haven't used it in Ages. It was great for finely chopping samples but I'm guessing much of it could be done much cheaper.

OP probably tried to edit a sample from Live's Packs.

Those can only be loaded and edited in Live or Max For Live.

Otherwise, Audacity should work fine.

It's a live guitar sample I recorded. When I try and hit edit with Audacity installed it says UntitledProject/Samples/Recorded/bla.aif cannot be opened.
