Using Launchpad, hitting record kills sound

I have the Launchpad Pro3 triggering a drum machine, which works fine, but when I hit record it counts in then cuts out all audio from the drum machine.
What might be the cause?
I'm triggering the drums from the sequencer in LPPro - could that be a problem? I can hear them fine when prepping a pattern, but hit record and it's game over.
