Can 11 make readable Lead Sheets from Midi?

Post by ThreeVerse » Sun Mar 12, 2023 10:05 am

Came across an ancient midi file I thought was lost forever.
I put it into Ableton, but it's a really busy piano piece with lots of syncopation, and it was out of sync with the track tempo, with lots of notes both early and late.
Quantize only works for a few notes out of close to a thousand.
So I am thinking of seeing if I can extract some sheet music out of the file and just get a real keyboardist to come here an play it into Ableton.
Any tips appreciated.
Thanks!

Nope.
I'm pretty sure I've seen a M4L device that can do this but don't remember where.
Imo it'd be quicker and easier to find a dedicated software, there's probably a free one.

Musescore is free.

Wouldn't the sheet music suffer from the same problem, though? If you convert a very out-of-sync MIDI recording directly to a score, the result will be unreadable – all those timing inaccuracies will be displayed as horribly complex notation, with dotted and slurred and tupletted notes and rests all over the place.

When importing MIDI, Musescore has an option called "Is human performance". This is supposed to help by "reducing the accuracy of MIDI-to-score conversion in favor of readability." From the manual: "It is useful for unaligned MIDI files, when no regular quantization grid is provided. For such files the automatic beat tracking algorithm is used which tries to detect the bar positions throughout the piece." I've never tried it myself and I imagine it won't work perfectly in your case, but you could give it a try.
