Live 11 M2 performance

Hi guys,

I am running live 11.2.11 both on a 2019 macbook pro (2,4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 32 mb) and on a 2018 mac mini (3,2 GHz 6-Core Intel Core i7 64 mb) and I am noticing that with my current sessions (lots of "live" tracks and vsts) the better specced macbook is barely powerful enough for my live work with smallish buffer sizes and and the mac mini on which I work at home on arrangements hangs by a thread around 70% cpu load even with large buffer sizes. (both machines are on monterey)

I am considering switching to the new mac mini M2 for my home setup (which will necessarily come with ventura), do any of you have real life experience about the gains in performance and stability over the intel machines with live?

I plan on keeping the intel macbook pro for a while, and I need to go back and forth with the same sessions running on both machines, would that be problematic?

Thanks in advance,

F.

Those silicon machines are unkillable (if that's a word)!

Thanks! But what do you mean by unkillable?

...e.g.: they perform best when the buffer size is set to 128 samples or less...setting the buffer size higher lets them de-activate the performance cores... :D

The M2 machine will be orders of magnitude faster and run cooler than the intel MBP you have, it’s literally one of the biggest jumps in computer power you’ll likely ever experience. Switching back and forth between the mini and MBP should be fine as long as you keep both at parity in terms of OS and Ableton updates.

That's the thing, I read that installing ventura on my 2019 2,4 GHz 8-Core Intel Core i9 is likely to slow it down when it is just about powerful enough to handle the workload for my "live" Live sessions. I was kind of hoping to be able to keep it under monterey which has been working fine so far, I really dont want to upgrade both machines at the same time if I can.

what do you think?

It might be doable, but I personally wouldn’t want to chance it that way. I had that same 2019 MBP and I can’t see how it would run worse under Ventura myself, but I haven’t it either since getting my M1 MBP.

Also when i for example resize (stretch) my audio loop its crackling thunder !

When i confront support with this and send videos of it they dont reply anymore ;(

@muraco mato, do you have the same issues using the Mac’s audio hardware instead of the RME?

Just to be sure... did you install the latest and correct RME drivers?

That is weird.

Can you try this: delete one track at a time from your live set and see if the problems clear up at any point. Does bringing it down to, say, 12 tracks have any change/improvement? Is there any single track that causes the issue?

It's hard to say... since you're only using Ableton native devices you would really expect things to be smooth.

Could you please post screenshots of Live's audio and MIDI preferences?

Hope this is some small help!

@muraco
Are you sure Live isn't set to Rosetta mode? It shouldn't do it by itself, but it's still worth checking.
Select the app in Finder, and cmd+i to open its info window. Here you'll see an option to run it in Rosetta mode.
