Offered a 2019 Macbook, are these specs good?

Post by NickStapples » Fri May 19, 2023 6:21 pm

Boss is offering me an old MBP for $350

MBP 2019, 16"
2.4GHz 8‑core Intel Core i9, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz, with 16MB shared L3 cache
64 GB 2667 MHz DDR4
2 TB SSD

Is this worth it for the price? Should I save up a few months for an M1?

Thanks!

That's a great deal for that laptop actually.

That said, if you CAN swing an Apple M based laptop, you might get a bit more life out of it. In addition to a LOT more computing power. Whether or not you need that though is up to you.

I dunno, those specs seem pretty smokin' aces for that price.

Is there any way he'd let you set it up for some music stuff and see if it's something that you like?

I'm doze, but I just bought a new lappy with an i7 with lighter specs and it's great for Ableton use ;) Yours should blow mine out of the water.
Live 11.x Suite, Push 2, AMD Ryzen 7900x @ 4.7 GHZ, Windows 11, 32 GB ram, Volt 2, Nektar T4 and Atom SQ.
Also a new lappy: i7 1269, 32 gigs of ram.

BTW, if you ever buy any new lappy, make sure you either buy the extra ram or it's 32 GB/higher. 16 does NOT cut it ;)

Unless you get a Mac where 16GB and their dynamic memory allocation is more than enough these days for 98% of music making, especially with the M chips.

It’d be nice if you could actually use the computer for a bit to test it out.

Technically, and from most dynamics, that price is an absolute steal. But it’ll still leave you wanting more, since the intels are essentially on their way out of Apple’s overall plan.

The reason why I say it’d be nice if you could use the computer first is because from what I’ve heard, the fans on the powerful intels could sometimes get pretty loud, and the computers could get hot very easily. Keep in mind, I do not have First Hand experience with this, so I could be way off. But this is one of those things that seems like a small detail today, but drives you absolutely mad later.

But yeah, ‘technically’, that laptop is a great deal. If I am wrong about the fan and overheating (overheating can also cause potential damage), then you should be set for a few years.
