Just got an update from HQ in Berlin I wanted to pass on:

- P3 controller with 15W USB-C only operates with dimmed display and LEDs
- P3 Standalone, will slowly drain the battery for a USB-C connection to a computer as these are maximum 15W.

There will be more info coming shortly about this.
Thanks!
An option/setting for stand-alone to run with dimmed display and LEDs and NOT rely on inbuilt battery would be essential Imho.

Btw mine arrived 5min ago 😍

I can confirm. I tried all kind of USB-A to USB-C cables I have and with none of them Push 3 (Controller Only) managed to power on.

The only way to make it work was with USB-C to USB-C cable to my X570 Asus motherboard. And yes it was with dimmed display and LEDs.

P.S. 15W is a lot of power for USB port. Regular USB 3.2 ports are up to 7.5W. (If you are interested you can read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB#Power)
And there was me buying and trying a cable that can handle up to 100w!

I’m still holding out hope that my issue is just the ports not talking to each other for whatever reason and that a firmware upgrade could fix it.

Ok so I think this input will help you : the push 3 controller does not power from usb-c/TB on my Mac mini M2 pro but it does with my macbook air m1. So that boils down to m1/m2 pro problem. I dunno if that can help the Ableton team in that regard.
So no need to buy another dozen of cables

😂

This is what I’m wanting to hear! But…

I did have no luck plugging it into my work laptops usb c port. I’m not putting too much into that as you know how work laptops are and how locked down they can be but it’s an HP Windows machine.

Anyway…! I do hold out hope that it is something to do with firmware and recognising certain ports and the Ableton guys can identify and push out an update.

Same here
On a Razer Blade 14" laptop from 2021 and no way to power the Push (standalone version) via the provided (or other) USB C cable.
I also tried on the motherboard of one of my workstations (Asus Strix Z690-A) and it didn't work for me.
What's the story Ableton?

Reporting this to Support would be helpful yes 👍

Another possible interpretation of your observations: maybe it's not a m1/2 PRO problem but maybe there's a difference in how a laptop VS a desktop sends (or not) power via USB?
Not saying that my own interpretation is even realistic, though 😅

Response from support
Hi Jan,

Thank you for your message. Please apologize for the delay in getting back to you.

Push 3 can be powered through a USB-C connection, but it is crucial to ensure that the USB-C port you are using can deliver sufficient power. The USB-C port needs to provide 5V/3A (15W) to power Push effectively. It is important to note that both USB-C and USB-A ports can be used for this purpose.

If the USB port does not deliver enough power, you may experience issues such as Push not powering on or the display appearing dim. In such cases, we strongly recommend using the provided power supply unit (PSU) to ensure reliable power delivery.

If you decide to use a USB hub, we advise using one with a USB-C Power Delivery (PD) port, which can deliver 20V/3A (60W) of power. This will provide the most reliable results when connecting Push.

Please be aware that the USB cable bundled with Push is intentionally short. This is because using a longer cable could introduce resistance and prevent the unit from powering on. If you choose to use a longer cable, ensure it is rated for 3A and always use the provided PSU to maintain a proper power supply.

If you have any further questions or require additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Best regards,
Johannes

  • 5V/3A (15W) is much more than was required by Push 2 :(
  • It is not clear to me what laptops/motherboards provide such output

I am able to charge and run my Push3 in standalone via an apple TB3/USBC cable and an Anker 747 power block with zero issues, full brightness.

Cool !
What is the battery life with this configuration?

Has anyone been able to charge the Push with a power bank? Mine has specs above what they recommend (25800mAh, here https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XQ ... UTF8&psc=1) but it doesn't work.

It's working great with this one here.
You need: 65W, 20V, 3A

Tried several ports and chargers, don't get it to work.
Bought Åskstrom from IKEA which have USB-C with PD up to 30W (https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/askstorm-4 ... -60461197/)

This should be more than enough to power/charge the standalone Push?

It's pretty clear when you look at the power port on the back of the unit.

It notes: DC 20v / 3a

This means it will consume 60 watts of power.
