Mono to Stereo - I mean it! Not the basic thing.

Post by SuNo-san » Tue May 30, 2023 5:30 pm

Two years ago, I was even more a beginner than now. I recorded a stereo track from a mono audio - Ableton created two tracks with the same content, as per the manual.

Now, I find my track a little bit dull ; and I won't/can't record it again.

So... are there some tricks that will allow me to use that track to create some audio panning that will leave the feeling that the track is stereo. Of course, I don't want to add >too much< effect on it. Or add more signals.

Any idea ?

There's many tricks like using the Haas effect, some chorus and/or other delay-based techniques in general; eq'ing the L and R differently; slightly detuning one or both channel etc...
Most of them come with mono-compatibility issues (to varying degrees).

If you have maxforlive, here's a free multiband Haas-like stereo widener that's 100% mono compatible.
And another much powerful one.

Merci ValliumDuPeuple,

This is brilliant! I don't have Max for Live (I own Live Standard) but will search for a VST plugin.

In the worst case, I can do with quadruplicate (?) the track and filter each so as to recreate the configuration you suggested.

Thanks a lot.

If you're not up to studying the topic and just want something that works great right away and is mono compatible, then Wider is a nice free plugin.

@jur

Thanks, it is on my list now. I will try a few of them (free to test or free) and choose the one that fits my taste.

Here they are: Izotope Imager 2, izotope Vocal Doubler, multibender (W.A. Production) QuickHaas 1.0.0 and now wider.

I would have loved Multiband Haas Effect from blue Mangoo, but works only as an iOS app.

Tried this and that...

Multibender is probably the best... but not in the free version.
Quick Haas is quick, but limited
Vocal Doubler does not work for the kind of tracks I have
Wider is very good, especially being able to control the pre-filtering of low frequencies.
Best for me is Imager 2, because of the capability to play with two parameters for each of the two mode. I definitively prefer the mode II (based on Velvet Noise based decorrelation (?)).

Thanks to all for your help…
