Incredibly long startup time with Live 2.01

Live 2.01 takes about 55 seconds to start up (blank document) on my iBook 500 MHz/192 megs RAM.

On the same machine, Live 1.5.2 takes 15 seconds.

Do others (PC or Mac) notice this same performance gap?

I hope Ableton works on this aspect of the program.

Live 2.0.1 takes only 7 seconds to startup using OS 10.2.3 on my G4 dual 500.
Maybe you're using OS9?

Hi all,

we know about this problem but haven't yet found the reason for this behaviour. But we are working on that to get closer to this problem.

Would be nice to know for me if the startup time of the Live 2.0.1 demo version are the same like the full version or shorter. Would be a good help if anybody of the user with a long startup time can do this.

The demo version is available from our website.
Feel free to contact me directly.

Alex

I have seen this behaviour too, but most of the time, Live just takes an estimated 5 seconds to load (both OS9 and X).

Could that be related to whether you have had your machine on for a long time and worked in other audio programs a lot prior to using Live?

Cheers,

Hi allo,

like I mentioned before it would be very helpful to know if the startup time of the Live 2.0.1 demo!! version are the same like the full version or shorter for all the user having a long startup time with Live 2.0.1.

You could ask why this is important for me.

We tried up to 10 different Macs at our office but so far we could not reproduce these long startup behaviour. I for any user outside the demo version has similier behaviour concerning the startup time I could send him a 'special' demo version with some more traces & logs to get the part of the software that eates this time.

Alex

my powerbook g3 400 took ! 1 minute 10 seconds ! to start a blank doc - iwas running os 9.2

it did this every time since version 2.0 came out - so I got a PC ! now it takes about 2 seconds [plus other benefits, like super-responsive GUI, more power]

I could test your demo dude - mailto:[email protected]

It takes over a minute on my PC the first time I open it. After the first time,it's around 10 seconds.

Demo starts up fine

I tried Alex's suggestion, and the demo of Live 2 takes about 15 seconds to start -- much much better than the near minute the non-demo version of the program requires.

Mmmmm....

I get very inconsistent behaviour:
Startup time for Live 2 in OS 9.2 is anywhere between 5 and 50 seconds. This definitely has nothing to do with whether I've had other audio apps open before. I rarely every use OSX so I can't comment on that.

weird work-around for long start up time

This is very bizarre to me, but it brings the Live 2.01 start-up time on my iBook down to 15 seconds.

Make a copy of the Log.txt file (found in the folder System/Preferences/Ableton)

Open the copied Log.txt file in MicroSoft Word. Then quit Word.

Now open Live, and voila! It opens in 15 seconds, rather than 55 seconds.

Hi all,

based on the help of aviavi (many thanks again) we could find out which part takes so much time. Unfortunately it's a system call and we're still try to find out why it takes so much sometimes but not under special circumstances (see aviavi's posting).
But we could reduced the long startup to about the half. Not good enough but better then nothing.

Alex

I'm running OS 10.2.3, and I get these horrendously long start-up times as well, although I read a previous post where another OSX user bragged about 7 second startup. Weird. I am running a Ti Powerbook G4 800 mHz with 1 gig of ram. I will download the demo version and try to replicate.

I have noticed that the more VST plug-ins I have in the VST folder, the longer it takes Live to find them, verify serial numbers etc.

I suggest changing Live's preferences to map to an empty VST folder, and then starting the program.

Then, gradually add in your VST plug-ins, one or two at a time, restarting Live each time, and you will then see which one is slowing it down.

This may or may not help, but helped me when I was trying out some crap VST plug-ins . . .

best,

GB

Thanks for the reply, but I have no OSX VST plug-ins yet (only in OS 9.1, running on my old system), so that wasn't causing my problem. I did assume that VST plug-ins would be a lot like having a lot of fonts and plug-ins installed and booting Photoshop (something I have more experience with), which can slow down launch.

Version 2.0.2 of Live has partially remedied the problem, as booting takes only 32 seconds now instead of 60+. (Quattro, 800 mHz Ti Book, 1 gig ram, OS 10.2.4).
