Ableton Keyboard mysteriously arpeggiating notes

I had this problem pop up many years ago but it was so long ago I forgot how to fix it.
If I haven't got my regular MIDI keyboard plugged in I will use the keyboard on my laptop to trigger notes in my synths. This normally works fine but recently it sounds as if there is an arpeggiator active somewhere and I cannot sustain a note.
Any idea what's causing this ?
