purchasing MacBook Pro - advice for live performance use

Post by docprosper » Mon Oct 30, 2023 2:43 pm

Hey All! Just got the go-ahead to buy a new laptop, as my current MacBook is old, old, and getting bogged down performance-wise. I'm now shopping for a new MacBook Pro, and will be interfacing with various midi controllers and a Xone:96 mixer for live performance with Ableton Live, Max for Live, and numerous plugins. I'll be feeding audio to/from the mixer for effects in Ableton, playing multiple stereo clips/songs back to the Xone on multiple channels, blending with vinyl (humblebrag), and feeding master audio back to laptop to record. I'm looking for a MacBook with enough processing and memory headroom to be bulletproof during live performances. Some specific questions regarding options:

- M2 Pro vs. M2 Max processor?
- # core CPU / GPU?
- amount of unified memory?
- amount of storage (specifically for Ableton performance, to include live recording of multi-hour sets)
- any other key discriminators I should be considering?

Cheers in advance... haven't been on the forum in a while, and am eager to re-engage! :D

Kindly,
Hamish
