How to fix the performance issue with 11.3?

Post by Citizen » Mon Jan 15, 2024 4:03 am

I'm sick of basic projects showing the rainbow wheel. On some tracks, its at the point that adding a new Audio or MIDI track is a 5-10 second wait!

(weirdly, more CPU heavy / VST heavy tracks are not doing this badly)

My computer is reasonably spec'd:

iMac 5K, 27-inch, 2020
3.8GHz 8-core intel i7
64GB RAM

CPU is averaging about 25% in Ableton,
but between 50-110% on Activity Monitor on OSX.
No audio drop outs.

Yes, I've tried different sample buffer settings. Makes no difference.

I've had performance issues ever since upgrading from 11.2 to 11.3, and have just read that there are known performance issues with 11.3. I would downgrade back to 11.2, but then I wouldn't be able to open the many projects I have started in 11.3.

What is the easiest fix?

Find the VST. Turn them all off/on until you find the culprit. In Session view, you can see the track(s) using the most resources by looking at the left-right bars near the bottom of the tracks. You may have to toggle a view on to see this, on the lower right. Not at my Mac right now so can’t check… but that’s what I do to find them. Then, bounce, freeze, remove, or replace the offender

Did you ever try this?

Also could you share a link to the "known" 11.3 performance issues you've mentioned - as from my experience these mostly likely refer to other issues than you're are experiencing, maybe also try the latest 11.3 version that was just released...
Mac Studio M2 Max and MacBook Pro M1

Genelec M030; Live 11.3.x and Live 12; macOS Sonoma

UAD Apollo Twin

Yes, I've tried restting Live. I've also resetting M4L, and installed the latest verion of M4L.

No, the problem is not with a VST, as far as I can tell. The performance issue still happens with sets that have almost nothing in them.
