MOTU UltraLite MK5

I picked up an UltraLite MK5.

My intended primary use for it will be for my iPad, replacing an XR18 that's been behaving a bit poorly lately.

Apparently, the MK5 can run standalone using ADAT with the Push 3 (at least based on what I've seen in the ADAT mega-thread), so I'm looking forward to testing it there and possibly grabbing another.

I did see a couple folks mention issues with it with their Push, yet many did recommend it prior to the posted complaints.

Can anyone chime in with their experience using it with Push -- good or bad?

The Ultralite MK3 can run standalone but doesn't have ADAT afaik.

This is correct regarding an MK3.

Apparently my fingers decided to type a 3 instead of a 5.

Original post corrected - I have an MK5.

An update:

I've tested this routing and it seems to work fine using MK5 stock settings, which has the optical out bank source as USB.

Push 3 <-- adat --> MOTU MK5 <-- USB --> iPad

Some things to note:

The P3S to MK5's ADAT I/O mapping is as follows to/from the iPad:

Push Ext Out 9+10 -> USB IN 13+14
Push Ext Out 11+12 -> USB IN 15+16
Push Ext Out 13+14 -> USB IN 17+18
Push Ext Out 15+16 -> USB IN 19+20

USB OUT 15+16 -> Push Ext In 9+10
USB OUT 17+18 -> Push Ext In 11+12
USB OUT 19+20 -> Push Ext In 13+14
USB OUT 21+22 -> Push Ext In 15+16

For analog inputs, I plan to use the MK5 to route those signals to the iPad and bus them back to the Push as needed.

If I won't be using the iPad, I have to switch the MK5 optical bank source to analog 1-8 so Push can process those signals directly.

More tests/notes to come, but I look forward to this configuration -- the iPad is a great bang-for-the-buck musical device with so many great audio apps.

Hey there! Thanks for your notes. I also have a MK5 with Push and iPad and I am trying to work it out myself, which can be confusing at times! 8O

One question I have is, how would you configure the Push/MK5/iPad so that we can use the iPad as an external FX box for Push? As you say, there are some fantastic apps on the iPad that I want to integrate on the Push and I'm wondering the best way to do this.

Hey don't worry about replying, I worked it out myself using AUM rather than cuemix 5

Quick question - are you monitoring from the MK5 or from the Push?

When testing the aforementioned setup, I was monitoring through the MK5.

I'm about to get an Ultralite mk5 and am wondering about the ADAT cables.

Is there any difference between ones that carry 8 tracks and those that carry stereo?

Any recommendations for cables to connect mk5 to Push3?

Thanks!

The type of connector is identical, and they just carry light, so in theory (and short runs) it shouldn't matter which ones you buy.

Thanks!

Is 10’ a short enough run?

Ignore that. It’s fine.

The original ADAT spec allowed a maximum cable length for optical cables up to around 5m / 16 feet, Per a quick google search…
