So I built myself a sample selector drum rack the other day. I can't find the tutorial I used, but it's the same approach as here:

Using the Sampler to nest a bunch of samples as multisamples, and using the sample selector to scroll through them.
I've tried this before some while back, might've been in Ableton 10, and I didn't experience any problems,
but this time, the track behaves extremely sluggish when doing certain things, like dragging and dropping midi clips. cut and paste, however, work just fine. It's also radically increased save and load times of projects, way beyond what it actually takes to load the device..
