My CPU is Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz and diagnostic software says just AVX and not AVX2.
Is there anything I can do to run Live 12 on this HP laptop.
I upgraded 12/03/2023 from 11 Standard to 11 Suite, so with the "free" upgrade to 12... wich does not start... on the System Requirements I remember just Intel i5...

If your CPU does not support AVX2, there is no way you are going to be able to get it to run. You can contact support for a refund on your Live 12 upgrade if this is affecting you.

Not just i5.
5th generation i5 to be precise.

The 3230M is an older 3rd generation i5.

I didn't know, luckily this is just a backup PC the one I use secondarily to produce something when I'm away from home where I have the main PC on which Live 12 works very well.
Thanks again and regards, Andrea.

Just adding myself to the list of loyal, long term Live users who will be sticking with Live 11 (I have just requested a refund).

Cubase 13, Native Instruments and any other music production software runs fine. Live 11 works well.

But Live 12 just won't run because I have an older CPU. I'm not going to upgrade a PC that everything else works fine on just to be able to use Live 12.

Which is a shame and it seems that I'm not alone in being in this situation.

I'm with you, I am a hobbyist and run an older Windows PC, I cant afford to upgrade,my computer, simply to use Live 12 .It does not make economic sense
my version of Live 11 suite runs well, so does my Studio One 6 Pro and FL Studio 21 and other software
I too have requested a refund
Ableton needs to do something pretty damn quick, to sort out this huge mess, otherwise it will potentially lose valuable customers like you and I.
In my limited experience I have never seen a major hiccup like this from other companies. I have enjoyed using Live 11, up to this point.
This whole debarcle, has left a foul, taste in my mouth,as I expect in yours Smallprint and many others here.

Hi! It hit me, too. My setup is running on a AMD FX8350. I know very well that it's not super new, but it's a capable 8 core CPU running @ 4000ghz and still has good benchmarks. So yeah, for sure there might be updates to do from time to time, but this is just a massive marketing fail.
AMD FX8350 ;0)
I remember it well, before I changed my gaming rig for a AM4 Ryzen 5950 just as the new AM5 platform was announced.

I found this online. https://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?t=31628
"the FX8350 belongs to a AMD micro architecture called Piledriver Piledriver features AVX1.1 but not AVX2"

Now it's looking like I'll have to buy a new/old Laptop, with the bover of moving loads of stuff. All this hassle just for LIVE.

I would ask for a refund but I have the Push3 and I'm keen to see Live 12 on that.

It's the same for me as most people here. Ableton Live 12 won't load. My CPU is an intel i5-3470. which I guess doesn't support AVX2.
My setup works perfectly well for everything else I use including Live 11.
It's very frustrating, I was really looking forward to using Live 12, however, I'm not going to get a whole new setup just to run it.
So I guess I'll have to get a refund.
I wonder if there's any possibility that Ableton will offer a version of Live 12 without the AVX2 requirement?
Or am I grasping at straws?

I hope there is some way of doing that,as like me there are many people here running old PC's with AVX . In my case as a hobbyist I cannot justify the cost of updating my refurbished Windows 10 PC for the sake of running Live 12
My other version of Live 11 runs well,as does Studio One 6 Pro,and FL Studio 21,all on this older PC.
Today I have got a refund,(waiting on that to go back to my card). I'm not technically minded, but I cannot understand why this new version of Live 12 needs AVX2 support
As this ,is clearly alienating us loyal customers from enjoying the new version, with our often older computers.

What is the mysterious AVX instruction set everybody talks about nowadays?

Basically it's a set of instructions that programmers can use that allow a CPU to process vectorizable calculations really fast.
AVX is an CPU extension that allows a quite drastic speed up in certain floating point operations. AVX will primarily impact media transcoding.

You will notice if a media encoder or video renderer uses AVX or not. The difference is quite different.

For more information look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_ ... Extensions

I assume AVX2 extensions can't be added to a CPU that doesn't already have them?

Oh, that would be cool if that worked. That would solve a lot of problems now.

No, that's not possible. It's part of the processor architecture and can't be changed retrospectively.

I have an FX6300 on an older system. I rarely use it but Live 11 works.

Supposedly my i7 4790 it will work. I probably won install 12 on it because I'm not ready to remove 11. Keeping both version take up 10GB of drive space and it's a 256gb drive and other developers like to bloat drive space.

Ableton had plenty of time to warn us. The moment Live 12 was announced, they could have made it clear on the order page.
They could have made it convincing, as one person on this thread has, with their explanation for why these instructions are used.

Instead, I have spent a few bucks 'preparing for 12, by improving my setup with i7 3rd gen CPUs because they were compatible
with the sockets in the laptops I have. Had I known I would have cut my losses and moved up a rung.
