For all the talk of the improved browsing in Live 12, I gotta say, on Push 2 at least, it seems like navigation of the library has gone backwards in term of functionality and speed.

In Live 11, using Push 2 when you paused on an folder (eg. a Collection) in your library hierarchy, it would open up and show the contents in the next right column, and you could start scrolling that content by rotating the encoder above that column. This was handy, because you could see what was in each folder, and rapidly start scrolling through.

Now the behaviour has changed, so you have to actively press the '>' button to enter the folder. This equals more clicks and is definitely slower.

WHY?!

Puzzlingly, when you finally navigate to a sound/sample you want to use, the button still displays as '>', instead of a more logical load.

I simply don't understand how this is a better system for navigating. While I can see that when there is a long list of items, they now display across the screen horizontally, I still don't think this is an improvement.

Oh, and for all the hype about tags — browsing by tags is not a thing on Push (yet?). Seriously?

There are a bunch of other minor changes to the browsing experience on Push and none of it actually improves things as far as I can tell.

Overall, the 'improvements' to the browsing seem like a muddle to me. Is this something that becomes more intuitive once the changes become internalised and the underlying genius of these changes becomes apparent?

Also, any tips for getting along with the new browser better and optimising the speed of one's workflow would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Tbh mate I just put all my common devices, racks and instruments in “favourites”.

Then I know that if I add a device/instrument, I just need to press “+” then click the jog wheel repeatedly (4 times I think) until I’m in the favourites folder. I then only need to use the jog wheel to choose something within the favourites folder, but tbh I use the d-pad more.

For more niche searching - yeah it can be a ball ache for sure. I find that using the d-pad (the bit with the 4 arrows and button in the middle) is way better than the jog wheel for scrolling long lists (I.e. big folders).
The endless encoders are also great for scrolling.

It just blows my mind that they have developed this quite involved tagging system, and it is totally omitted from Push functionality.

While Maschine had its flaws, the one thing that device NAILED was browsing - and that was all based on a pretty well designed tagging system. If only Ableton could implement something similar - that works on Push!

Maybe it’s in the works, and will come in a future update, but for now it seems like a massive missed opportunity.

The filtering/tagging search is coming in L12.1 (currently in beta).
It should improve your navigation quite a lot.

Favourites is one of the default collections - it’s the red one (at least on my p3).

You know how to tag a device/instrument with a collection right? When hovering (scrolling) over the device/instrument in the browser, one of the encoders at the top shows an empty coloured square (red - “favourites” - is the default one). Click the button underneath the encoder to fill in the coloured square (and add the device/instrument to that collection).
I’m describing this from memory so apologies for the vagueness.

The good thing about the collection “favourites” - the red one - is that it’s the first one highlighted in the browser by default (same with “collections” in the browser level above “favourites”). So all you need to do is click the jog wheel a few times (no scrolling needed) after pressing g the “+” (add) button and you’re there.

That’s my workaround until the awesome ableton tagging gets added to push
