Push 3 standalone w/ Launchpad Issue

I have the launchpad. maybe it's the XL? 64 square buttons and 16 circles around the edge.
i don't use the native mapping when I perform live in ableton
I've transferred my file to my P3S and my launch control is working just fine (custom mapping).
The custom mapping for my launchpad loaded, but the problem is the display just lights up corrosponding to where the clips are located within the file. I don't use the launchpad to play clips, I use it to trigger effects. When I do it in ableton on laptop the lights are off when the effect is off, and turn on when it's on...now there is no change on the P3S, they just stay on (or off) all the time mapped visually to the clips in the file, but they work correctly. this is a huge problem for me...solutions?
yes i have gone in the MIDI menu of the settings and into in/outputs and checked all the comibinations of track / sync / remote. the only thing that changed is some of those settings cauuse the lights to flash on and off which is even more annoying.
