Ableton Live 12 low network usage to network drive

Hello

I have an issue where I'm now looking for days to fix it :/ Maybe I find help here.

I wanted to connect my external drive (Yottamaster RAID) to my Router to make it accessible in the whole network and also over a VPN connection when on the run. I have perfect access from Windows and also a decent download rate of around 66MB:

But when opening Ableton there is almost no usage of the whole bandwidth (my Standard Template is on that Network Drive):

I'm really not sure how to fix this. By the way, after some time, the template opens but all the Samples preloaded on my tracks are also on the network drive. So it definitely has the connection to the drive but the performance is just really slow.

Someone else already experienced that or have an idea if there are restrictions to how Ableton uses the bandwidth and how i can fix this? Thanks in advance :)

Regards Robin

Hi.

I am afraid but from the information you provided you are trying to expect enterprise networkperformance with hobby hardware tools. Also there is information missing on what Yottamaster RAID you have and what specs the router has. I would advise you to make yourself familiar with read/write operations on storage devices and network operation topics.

Usually read/write IOPs tumble down dramatically the smaller and the more the files to be handled are. HD and SSD storage devices utilize their full potential only if the file is large and sequentially written on the destination (with some differences to be taken into account between HD and SSD type storage). If thousands of tiny files need to be handled the advertised speed reduces dramatically for magnitudes. Additionally network data handling topics add to the reduction of bandwidth, not to talk about VPN tunneling.

The copy example you provide is a single big file and hence yields a high bandwidth count. It is not comparable. As an Ableton Live project usually consists of overwhelmingly small files - except for the audio source files perhaps - there is exactly nothing that Ableton could do to increase the read/write performance because it is not under its control.

You probably want to look into enterprise grade NAS, enterprise grade router (10 G min.), and of course a very potent ISP and VPN-solution if you want to work remote. Not available for a few hundred bucks unfortunately…

Hey nicobi,

thanks for your reply. I also did more research on this topic and decided to invest in a synology NAS. Everything else seems to be pushing a RAID system into something it is not and will therefor never work as reliable as needed. So for all others that get here, you might rather invest too :)

So thanks again for the reply and this topic can be seen as closed.
