Instruments can only be used in MIDI tracks.

Are you talking about this message not disappearing?
If yes, then that's just a known UI bug and you shouldn't worry about it.

I've been seeing this too... save the project, create a new one, then reopen the project.. and the message is gone. No problem, just annoying.

I can reproduce it in the following way:
In Session View, drag an instrument or MIDI effect (native, Max, or plugin) over an audio, return, or master track and drop it in an empty space (so a new track is created).
The message will disappear and not reappear if you hover over a MIDI track before dropping. Sometimes, you can maneuver in such a way to get rid of the message before dropping the device.

Hovering over the master or return tracks can quickly happen when dragging something from Live's browser but a bit too far to the right or dragging things from the desktop or Finder/Explorer.

In the Arrangement view, it only happens occasionally with plugins.

This issue still occurs in Live 12.10.1b1.
When I reported this four years ago (Live 10), they stated at that time it was a known bug.
I'm bringing up the issue with every new Live version, but as we can see, it is still not fixed.

@Rivanni
I envy your persistence (in Ableton many simple "problems" remain unsolved for years)!

It helps. Thank you so much!
