Midi Ports being disabled when connecting another USB Device

This is a bit of a strange one. Having connected a hardware synth into Ableton via the external instrument or a distinct midi track, and having set the Midi to and midi channel, when i power up another synth, the 'midi to' field and midi channel grey out. When looking at the drop down menu, the device is there and not greyed out so I reselect it, which is ok, but the midi channel then defers back tro Channel 1.

This does NOT happen when I connect a device which is connected to Ableton via 5 PIN DIN midi.

This is happeneing for any synth I connect and any synth I then power up.

Anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

Yeah, I only recently got back into making music (upgraded from ableton 9 to 12 about a month ago). Ive got 4 hardware synths, an MPC X SE, a push 2, and a midi controller, and each time I 1) load a ableton, 2) load a project in ableton, or 3) unplug or replug in a synth, I have to go back through all of my tracks and remap everything. What’s more frustrating is that I have certain synths only listening on certain midi ports and I have to go back and set those all as well.

This is super frustrating and time consuming.

This seems like an easy fix- Ableton already recognizes that the midi port was configured previously so it’s not losing all the information about the ports every time a USB port is temporarily added / removed. Why can’t it just go through the list of known ports and remap them?
