Live 5.0.1 - RMX can't MIDI learn!

Post by Per Boysen » Tue Aug 09, 2005 10:43 pm

In Live 4.1.4 I was able to control Stylus RMX from my Faderfox LV-1. The MIDI learn process in the RMX plug-in window worked fine. Now in Live 5 RMX seems to not detect the MIDI for its MIDI learn function (not talking about Live's MIDI learn here).

Have othere observed this with RMX in Live 5?

(I'm on Mac/OSX)

Hi Per Boysen,

So you have MIDI learned a button/slider of the RMX plug-in.
Then if you change the corresponding knob on your faderfox, you see the MIDI message coming in (The MIDI In indicator should flash).
But the MID learned slider/button of the RMX plug-in does not change its value?

Is that right so far or did I misunderstand you?

If yes, does it make a difference if the custom plug-in window is opened or not?
Does the corresponding slider of the Ableton parameter view of the plug-in change its value?

regards,
Alex

surely you have to have record ready set on the RMX's MIDI TRACK.

You have understood me perfectly well.

No difference at all.

The RMX plug-in does not show these parameters to the host application, so I can't say.

Holy Crap! You're right bensuthers! What a crazy bug!!! Strange workaround, but at least it's usable now. Thank you b!

Hi Per Boysen,

Sorry, but this is logical behaviour and not a bug

The thing is, that in this case the plug-in uses its own learn modus and NOT the ableton live remote function.

The plug needs to get a midi signal for learning, or later, to remote a parameter like it needs also a mid note to play something.

So, if record or monitoring of the track is off, you can,t play, learn or remote the plug-in via external midi messages. (In this case the plug is feeded with the recorded midi events)

I hope this makes it a little more clear.

Cheers p.e. :P

Yes I do understand it, but I don't see the point in this solution. What was wrong with the way Live 4 took external MIDI input? Does that functionality clash with some of the new Live 5 specific functions on a programming level?

The already available options for routing MIDI in Live should be used. I think. Record Enable, on the other hand, should be used when you intend to record - not as a workaround for sending external MIDI to a third party plug-in.

Thanks again to bs for posting the workaround! I have no problems with using it, because I can always remover the stop buttons for every empty clip on that track to prevent clips from being accidently recorded

Hi Per,

maybe I misunderstood something :( but for most of vst and au plug-ins you CAN use lives internal remote function (also lives internal automation) but some plug-ins are using their own internal midi remote (like they do as a standalone application).

For example I use the "Tassman Keys Edition VST" Plug. To learn a midi parameter in this plug I also have to use this "workaround", also in Live 4.

It seems that the RMX also is those kind of plug-in cause you say "The RMX plug-in does not show these parameters to the host application"
( btw the tassman shows only one parameter called "parameter #1" :) )

(don´t know about the RMX so I don´t know it´s behaviour in L4)

If I misunderstood you completely then I´m sorry and then forget all what I said. (only wanted to help  )

cheers p.e.
