I opened a song I did in OS9 and uses 68%cpu..I then opened the same
in OSX 10.2.3 and read 77%.Also notice live takes a bit longer to boot up.
Maybe it is the Live code or maybe OSX?

Mac Titanium 400
OS9.2 & OSX 10.2.3
512RAM

Might also be the driver of your audio HW.
(also, please verify that your audio and midi
settings are the same in each case.)

yon / ableton

I wouldn't bet on any improvements in this area. I can only speak of my experience with Windows (so please do correct me if I'm wrong on this), but with every new OS update, Microsoft introduces lots of additional features and more refined graphic elements which slows any computer that isn't halfway current down to a crawl. This is maybe a big exaggerated, but when I installed XP on my machine, I got much higher performance meter readings in Logic than on Win98.

Anybody know if significant improvements from either Apple and /or Ableton can be expected?

Cheers,
Format

from Ableton: it would be nice to think we could expect G4 optimisation, but that would affect OS 9 and X equally.

from Apple: yes, absolutely. It's in their interests to get CoreAudio sorted - they own Emagic now etc. It's not a case of adding new features & placing more load on the system - it's a case of getting the system they've built to work quicker at a low level. On past experience there's plenty of scope for this (e.g. in the OS X 10.2.3 update, everyone's GUI suddenly got faster because of optimisations Apple had made).
