Just out of interest, what style of music is it you're playing live?
Apologies, I originally understood that you wanted to use looper to capture and layer up your guitar. The great thing about Looper is that you can overdub, which you can't do with clips in the session view.
I experimented with using the Follow function for a while but I found that it's not consistent enough to use live really. I think your best bet would be to invest in a foot pedal that you can use to tap in your tempo or just use the tap tempo on the Push then just get yourself some in-ear monitors and hook them up to your Phones. That way if you can have your Main Out go to your audience speakers and only you can hear the click track.
If you watch someone like Ari@home he is doing just that. Click coming through only his headphones and the music only coming through his speakers.
Once you have your groove going just turn off the click.
I play all sorts of music but it's in pubs/bars, everything live, no pre-made loops, no backing tracks, everything I do is looped on the spot.. mostly rock/pop etc, I'm a full-time musician, mostly covers gigs are my primary source of income.
I've found a few workarounds, nothing exactly the way I want things to work, but it's possible to lay down multiple guitar tracks one after another by having a track set up to receive my guitar input, and have that always monitored - then send the audio from that track to other tracks that have monitoring off, and those other tracks are what I actually "arm" and record onto.
That gets them into session view clips - it's not the same as overdubbing, but it does let me quickly have a slew of different guitar tracks if I want, that will record what I'm putting into them, which means I can have all guitar fx etc on that same original "input" channel that the others are receiving from.
I don't think I'll bother with a foot pedal for tap tempo, unless it's part of a larger/more capable midi controller like the Nektar Pacer.. because changing the tempo on the Push itself is simple af and it's only relevant if I was to use headphones and have a click anyway.
Which I might consider, looping to a metronome is more fun for me, I'm just a bit iffy on doing it on stage with headphones in.
Irrelevant but I've also worked out a way to use sustain pedals as kick/snare triggers, I just set them up through a MIDI controller - I can't send note CC via the controller, and it sucks that I couldn't just MIDI map the kick and snare "play" buttons in drum rack but there's a simple workaround which was just having the sounds I wanted recorded as their own clips on their own tracks, make them one-shots so they don't loop and turn globatlisation off, then map the play button for those clips to the sustain pedals.
Works a treat and allows me to play guitar and have some simple kick and snare action going with my feet - little things like this help spice it up imo as I'm not forced to do things the same way every time. Free to loop if I want, or do it all manually etc.
So far the Push has been a total blast and is crazy powerful, I'm sure I'll grow into taking advantage of what's possible - eventually I think I'd like to not really be doing all loops etc live on stage, but more of a hybrid thing where I'm using some pre-made tracks and can still loop my own drums/keys/guitar if I want, and have it so after dinner-time sets, I can change things up to be less singer-songwriter and more full-band or DJ-ish, but with me still singing and playing guitar/keys/drums.
The Push seems like it opens up every door, I can do things however I want, including looping without a metronome/click just like a normal BOSS looper etc (via using the Looper device on some tracks). Can use it just for FX and be pure acoustic guitar + vocals without any gimmicky stuff if I want. Can launch pre-made beats to start songs off and loop to them. Can just do whole songs with pre-made loops and bring things in/out as I want. Can just record entire backing tracks for songs and literally just let that play for those songs if I want to be super lazy. Can play guitar + have kick/snare with my feet if I want.
It's pretty nuts how many doors this has opened up for me.
Your setup looks awesome btw.
