Clip Automation Data

Another one from me today:
If you copy a Midi Clip from one track to another with an identical instrument in each it copies the automation data from the other track/clip which is great.
However in my setup I have all my instruments embedded within a large instrument rack, when I migrate my instruments from the 'composition' project in the the 'live' set up I loose all the automation data for that instrument which is lame.
To be honest I totally understand why this doesn't work, but I wonder if there's a different way to think about this.
