Ableton Authorisation Confusion.

Post by Mat_G » Thu May 08, 2025 7:34 am

Hi, firstly I’m writing on behalf of my son. He has autism and is in quite a state because he’s incredibly confused and has ‘shut down’.
He purchased Ableton 11 Standard a while ago. He installed it on his main PC and laptop.
Recently his laptop had to be replaced. He now has a new one. He deleted Live 11 from his old laptop.
He logged into his Ableton account to request an unlock for his new computer.
He couldn’t find where to do this.
He found that it said ‘Ableton 12 download’ and that he could install it on his computers.
He wasn’t entirely sure what this meant but he installed it on his new laptop. It authorised when he opened it.
He then went to his main PC and signed in to his account. There he found that it said the same thing. Ableton 12 Live Download. He followed the instructions and installed that on his computer. Again it authorised it when he opened it.
In his account it still says that he can install Live 12 on other computers. He has said that it isn’t supposed to say that??
He is not sure what he has done and that it doesn’t seem right. He doesn’t quite know what he has downloaded or whether it is a trial or limited version. He hasn’t been asked to pay anything.
(He still has Ableton 11 Standard on his main PC).
Unfortunately having Autism he is really quite distressed that he might have done something wrong.
I’ve said that I can pay £299 for the Ableton 12 Suite just to get him back on track (I’d rather not).
Please could you help us sort out the confusion?
Kind regards.

Personally, I got the Ableton Live 12 upgrade for free. (Although it was the Lite edition, as that is the version of Live 11 I own.)

If he wants to be 100% sure his ableton live is authorized, he can go to Options > Settings > Licenses/Updates. In the Settings window, it should say "Ableton Live 12 authorized." next to the Ableton Live 12 logo, which means it is officially authorized.

Hopefully this helps!

When you go to your son's Ableton account page (https://www.ableton.com/en/account/), the drop-down list above the download button should mention the licenses he has. Perhaps he also got a Live 12 Lite license or some other license other than Live 11 Standard.
When authorizing Live you must pick the correct one.

What exact Live version is mentioned to the left of the Download button? Maybe Live 12. That might be what he has installed, not knowing where to find the Live 11 download.

The download of Live 11 Standard, Version 11.3.42, can be found in the download archive (https://www.ableton.com/en/download/archive/).
Once this version is installed, authorize it using the correct license.

I hope this helps.
