play midi clip tonaly with Mac keyboard

Post by youngsaus » Fri May 30, 2025 11:44 am

so ive been looking for a way to play midi clips like a arp sequence, this is a feature in ableton, but the videos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tc0PMfy3ZXE&t=88s only demonstrate it with a midi keyboard. I want it to work with the native keyboard.

one of the features im missing from renoise is sequencing patterns, and its technically possible in ableton, but its not as straight forward.
can anybody tell me how to achieve this. Its super frustrating,

Cmon guys ive been trying to this for like over 10 years....

That uses MIDI Map Mode. it only works with external MIDI, not internal MIDI nor Computer Keyboard.

You can use a virtual MIDI loopback to send MIDI outside then back into Live.

But simply buying a MIDI keyboard would be simpler IMO, especially when it would have saved ten+ years of effort.

to be fair I got a launch key 25, and a launchpad pro x. its just that I love making music on my lap, and I got no convenient place to but the launchpad while producing, so ive conveniently used the Mac keyboard instead.

there is a saying like, the camera u got in the bag is the best camera, which is often the phone.
for me the MacBook Pro keyboard is convenient. and I got no idea why I can't play midi clips in multiple pitches with it. I can do that in renoise effortlessly. and it's a feature in ableton. Like ive already bought two controllers, I just prefer the Mac keyboard.

I guess I need to find a stand that I can put over my Mac for easy management.. ahhh, I just wish this was a feature, like it really bugs me out that its not a feature for the Mac keyboard. its such a musical feature. like it would make so much sense to do this.

I know I can manually map midi clips to each letter, but easily playing a clip in different pitches seem like such an intuitive feature. I love things that are intuitive. things that doesn't take me away from the flow.

I love my launchpad too even though I haven't used it. mainly cause I had a 2015 MacBook with too much latency, now I got a newer Mac so it might be time. but it still feels clunky for me to bring the launchpad its so big. I was originally gonna get the launchpad mini for this reason, but I could get the more expensive one so I got that one instead lol .

Ableton team I would really appreciate this feature. all do some crazy shit for it. im a fiend for that feature alone. forreal. I was so frustrated today with not having that feature that I made a painting instead.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone could make a max4live instrument device on a channel of its own that allows a selected clip to be played via input into that instrument channel.
