I have a question regarding memory. I have 512 s*itty ol' sdram with a p4 and my cpu is taking a beating running 12 tracks. Is throwing another 512mb stick of memory in the answer? Thanks

I don't use a Windows box but Live pulls clips from the hard drive under the Mac version.
Extra memory will probably only help if you use a RAM disk for clip storage.

Here is my DAW setup. Twin PIII 733, 768 MB RIMM PC 800 RAM, 160 GB external firewire HD. One thing that might help your cpu spiking is if you turn off ALL other proggies while using Ableton. Unless of course you are using Rewire into Cubase or Sonar. Also, since Ableton streams samples from the hard drives it is best to have as fast of HD as possible. Also, make sure you have your pc set for "background services" and shut down ALL other programs. Especially anti-virus (disconnect from cable modem if you are online), firewalls, other audio proggies. Turn off cd insert notification from your cd-rom drive (it also pings the cpu every few seconds) and that should help your cpu from spiking. Those are just a few things that might help your computer.

If you suspect a memory problem use the Windows Task Manager to find out if you're low on memory, though I would be surprised if (running only needed apps) you're out of memory with Live and just 12 tracks.
What effects are you using on the tracks, and what other apps are running while Live is running?
