How not to lose automation when macro mapping a parameter ?

If you automate a parameter, let's say an Operator's Filter Freq, then group the Operator into a rack, and macro map the Filter Freq, you lose the automation.
Is there any way to get it back ?
If I right-click on the freq knob, I can still show its automation, but it's greyed out, and most importantly, not able to be copied.
Am I missing some obvious thing ?
EDIT : in fact, if you copy the automation, then map the param to a Macro, then you can paste it as an automation for the Macro.
No better thoughts ?

M4L observe the automated parameter, > set value > live.object to new parameter > record.

Thanks.
I'll try that tomorrow (when I can) although I don't think it will work as the automation of a parameter controlled by a macro gets disabled.
