Round trip MIDI latency. VSTs MIDI back out to external instrument

So this is a simplified version of my MIDI setup.
Oxi One sequencer MIDI into 8x8 MIDI interface. MIDI interface connected to computer by USB.
I have three MIDI DIN ports coming from the OXI One (via Split) into the MIDI interface and then back out to MIDI ins on the Modular.

Sequencing a VST from the OXI One sequencer over MIDI is fine
Sequencing an external instrument via CV and monitoring via a live input works great and is bang in sync.

BUT. If I send MIDI from a VST to an external instrument and monitor via a live input the sync is out. This must be the plugin buffer delay.

However if I choose "Reduced latency when monitoring" then the VST and the external MIDI instrument are suddenly bang in sync. Problem is that the rest of the tracks VSTs are all over the place. So that's not a fix.

So this means I have to measure the current latency of the projects plugin buffer and compensate with a negative track delay offset from the MIDI track going to the external instrument. PITA there has to be a better way right?

The irony is the MIDI that loops back from the VSTs to the Modular is bang on time if I direct monitor lol

So looks like I am going to re-think this and try going via USB from the OXI One to the VSTs and direct MIDI to the Modular external gear to avoid the loop back. Shame as it was really easy to record all the MIDI back into tracks and divert MIDI from VSTs back out to the modular.

Messing with the MIDI Track delay is just dodgy and difficult to pin down exactly. When I use the reading of the DEC output and add it on to the live input (subtract) I get really solid lock on the sync.

Oh well...
