Random loss of ability to carry out several edit functions

I posted this before, and corresponded briefly with Alex on this in Live 4. THe solution then was minimizing the screen, and then maximizing. The functions would no longer be greyed out.
I was sort of expecting this to go away in LIve 5 but it hasn't. It is very problematic, as it kills the flow, and what is live with a compromised work flow?
