Can track automation be pasted into session view clip?

I am recording "real time" VST automation in track view (cutoff freq, for example). Here's my question:
Can you copy / paste previously recorded MIDI note data AND the associated automation envelopes from track view into session view?
I have tried this, but whenever I paste an automation envelope it appears to overwrite the MIDI note data.
If this is possible, can anyone walk me throught the steps? Basically, I am looking for a workaround for not being able to record real time automation in session view.
Thanks!

I suppose by "track view" you mean Arrangement view , right ?
As far as I know automation data recorded into arrangement view CANNOT be dragged back into Seesion view .
This puzzled me too when I first started out with LIVE - actually I still don´t fully understand why such an obvious feature was omitted - maybe it´s too complex and maybe you can with version 5 ?
I´m sure the lot of us who weren´t on the beta team still has to "get into" the new LIVE but as I said I´m pretty sure that what you´re asking can´t be done .

Yes, you can definitely do this.
Select the envelope area that you want to copy on the track containing the automation.
Goto the edit menu - select copy automation
switch to session view
select the clip you wish to copy into
open up the clip envelopes window in the clip edit window
find the parameter you wish to copy to
unlink the envelopes and make the envelope length the same as the area you selected in the arrange view
goto the edit menu - select paste
in Live 5 you can use right click to achieve the same thing.

Thanks for posting!
I followed your directions exactly, and everything appears to be fine at first. The envelope pastes into the clip. I can see the envelope. It looks cool. But no automtion occurs on the clip. The selected parameter shows the little red square indicating that the parameter was selected for automation. Unlink was selected as you stated.
If I click on the icon to play the arrangement view, the automation plays that is in that view. But not the session clip with the pasted automation.
Any ideas?

Session clips and arrange clips are separate.
You need to trigger the clip in the session view to get it to play. Click on the the triangular clip launch button that is next to the name of the clip in the session grid.
You can only ever have one session clip, or one arrange clip playing on any track at a time.
So when you trigger the clip in the session view, whatever is playing in the arrange view at that point in time will stop playing.
To return back to what is playing in the arrange view hit the 'back to arrangement' button up in the transport bar.
hope this helps

Paul,
Thanks again. I reread my post and realized I was not clear. I do understand the concept of one playback source at a time.
In my situation, I copied and pasted the MIDI clip from the arrangement view into the session view first, then copied and pasted the automation envelope from the arrangement view to the session view as a second step.
When I play the session clip, the automation does not work. Of course, if I press the "back to arrangement" button, I hear the arrangement view clip and the automation works as expected.
Any other ideas? Thanks!

i think this might be because the clip view automation is relative to where the faders/sends/levels whatever are at. if you don't have them turned all the way up, they don't do anything. just a stab in the dark mind, but it might help.

Hey enzymex,
I just tried do write a volume automation for a clip in arrangement view, then copied the clip into session, copied the volume automation into clip enveloppe, and all is working fine.... Do you copy the enveloppe to the right parameter in the clip ?
Best,
amo

amo,
Thanks. The right parameters are selected. I'm thinking that my situation has something to do with the fact that I am remapping a controller (say mod cc1) to a VST parameter for Live automation. Perhaps in your case the VST is also responding directly to (cc7) and that's why it worked for you? In other words, do you see automation envelopes actually "move" the VST params while in session view?

In fact I may not have tested the right parameter: I tried with the track volume. And once in session view, and once I copied the automation in the clip, I didn't see the fader of the track moving, but a small orange dot moved, and the result was audible. I will try with a vsti parameter once at home tonight.
Cheers,
