Well I thought I would post a lil review for all the lovers and Darth Haters out there. I myself fall about in the middle but my girlfriend loves him (wether its for the looks or actually the music is still under debate).
It was at the Element, nice venue but definately attracts the beautiful people aka greek row kiddies.
Anyways, his setup was a 17" powerbook, a triggerfinger(which he never touched once), and an o2. His set was rolling along pretty well actually as I was skeptical with all the "laptop symphony sucks ass" reviews on the site. It was no "Symphony", but it was pretty well put together prog house/breaks. He didn't really play anything from his major releases which surprised me as I was expecting some 20 minute Blue Skies rework or something.
About 35 minutes in...CRASH, or so I thought. Actually this dreadlocked guy (who I think might be dj flav) never plugged in the damn power when he set it all up! Funny, but he recovered fairly well by dropping the Gorillaz Feel Good inc. He also played the guitar riff from Smashing Pumpkins 1979 which was cool.
The only other thing that happened was he accidentally must have clicked the tempo and scrolled down as we all got a timestretch freeze up.
The next hour was more of the same but he played some of his newer vocal tracks which I could care less about, but the girls (and some guys) seemed to like it.
All in all, I have seen way worse on stage, as well as way better.

I used to love BT. What happened to him? emotional technology?!?! gayest album name and cover EVER!!

I must say i respect the guy as a producer but when theres tracks of his i think i'll like he'll drop in some element in there that'll turn me off. He can write for orchestra but he reminds me of Bill & Ted. An interesting guy in an interview.

ha! something similar happened to me in Tokyo, minus the dreads and the crash.
about 50 minutes into my set the message "You Are Now Running On Reserve Battery Power" popped up.



so i turned the screen brightness to 1 and plugged er in, just in time....

BT also uses the standalone "D-Beam" controller (not the actual name, I think, as "D-Beam" is the name Roland uses for its licensed use) that allows him to control his custom stutter plugin in 3 dimensions somewhat theremin style.
When I saw him in Dallas a month or so ago, he opened with a mix of breaks against a 50-cent acapella, with he proceeded to completely mangle to the crowds ecstatic approval. It was cool.

Just to clarify, DJ Flave doesn't have dreadlocks. His hair is super short and red. ... So that actually wasn't him.

What I have heard about his "D-Beam" controller is it is a product from the same guy that made the D-Beam for Roland. Its just a stand alone type of thing, and only a couple hundred were made special.

Hah! I was a promoter for that show. I actually missed the opening though due to late friends. Purgatory is a NICE club, with a good system, and he really had the crowd going.

Man, I need to hurry up and "invent trance" so I can rock some crowds like that!
