Does anyone here have some tips about creating these 8bit gameboy like sounds?
I know it can be done with Little Sound DJ, but is there a way to do it with just Live 5?
And I have another question, for some reason I can't play notes sometimes when I press asdf etc. Why?

if you're in live 5 you can turn the midi keyboard input on and off with ctrl-shift-K. theres a little piano keyboard logo up in the top right next to [key] that lights up when its on. can be kind of a pain in the arse...

i think borrowing a gameboy, taking a little mic and sampling the gameboy would be a good way to get gameboy like sounds

probably no quite what your after, but there is a "game" for the DS coming out called electro plankton.... lots of fishy things which you interact with to create ambient electro.
hasnt been released in the uk yet... but i would love to have a go.

Or you could download the covert operators patches. Lots of gameboy-ish sounds in there.
Especially those with the 4 or 8-bit sinewaves

Okay thanks all.
I wasn't really planning to sample my gameboy, why? Because I can't play every note then. Although you can do a lot with transpose. I was more looking for a lo-bat (
www.lo-bat.be) type of sound, but without a Little Sound DJ card. Thanks anyway!

Beleive it or not .....there is actually a circuit of gameboy "djs" if you will.
I saw it on the web a while back and i'll try to locate it for you.
If i remember correctly there was a tweak you could make to "play" the sounds through the controls of the gameboy. Those guys were damn good to!
Also there was a standalone program of the same sounds that you could trigger the sounds off of your computers keyboard.
If your on a mac you could then use soundflower to channel it to live for recording.
Google it...

This has been big for a while. Pittsburgh had one of the earlier scenes for this, though I forget what they were called. One of the guys went on to become "GirllTalk," a mash up laptop dude with REALLY hot dancers.
I saw an installation at the Whitney Biennial last year. Some dude was selected from the tens or hundreds of people who make this kind of music simply because he was classically trained in music and claimed he was using the audio and video capabilites of the nintendo (8 bit) as an instrument. Oh academia. How do I fucking hate thee...

A person a few posts above posted the nanoloop link:

It's a cartridge that is a sequencer for the synthesizer chip inside the Gameboy. They also sell a MIDI cable that you attach so you can control your Gameboy with an external sequencer/controller. I've seen it, and it's quite neato. I think that's what all those Gameboy musicians were using.
