it doesnt' always have a ton of stuff, but guitar center is fairly ok... they normally cut you a pretty good deal (if you ask) on the floor models..

It's been a while since I've been there, but you might try Gand Music in Northfield. They used to have a selection of higher end stuff that wasn't always available at other stores.

Hi Anymouse,
The coolest off-beat stores I know of in Chicago are Midwest Buy and Sell at 6500 W Irving Park and occasionally the Music Store on Irving around Kedzie (?). Midwest Buy and Sell has reasonably priced stuff, but the best place, in my opinion, and where I get most of my gear (besides online and Guitar Center) is on craigslist.
www.chicago.craigslist.org. Craigslist and eBay have really taken the place of a lot of the cool used music gear stores. Chicago Music Exchange on Clark is worth a visit if you're a guitar fan, but you'll be paying a collectors price there.
Good luck!
