james brown, the explosions, rhythm heritage, robert parker, gil scott heron, michael viners incredible bongo band, marvin gaye, chuck brooks, moody scott, david bastille & the gladiators, peoples choice, danny white, curtis mayfield and curtis blow, ernie k, patrice rushen, eddie, the gators, the vibrettes, the jimmy castor bunch, o'donnel levy, rick james, family tree, ellen mcillwaine, professor longhair, the meters, banbarra, ben e king, the notations, the soul searchers, johnny hammond, ann sexton, funky 4+1, patti jo, gentleman june gardener, labi siffre, kool & the gang, chuck carbo, the doobie brothers(!?), etc etc etc

original breaks, im no master, but have a dig around and you can find a beat to go with anything.

a few edits, some comp and eq and you got one sick beat. much more satisfying than using something straight out of the box, and its also got that "feel"...... even more satisfying is writing your own!

One of the ways I enjoy coming up with new beats is to sit with Battery/Impulse and my midi keyboard and try to play beats from songs I like. I always get good results trying to copy old funk stuff, and even things like Lalo Schifrin's Dirty Harry soundtracks :)

Look for Dave Akuma's set. They are free, and a great archive.

Excellent suggestion! I found a number there that I didn't have yet, and more than a few I never even heard of!

Nice!

how does the afore-mentioned site work? i click on a wav file and my powerbook opens up Quicktime with an audio player that does nothing.
