Runtime Error on the runtime library...

On my VAIO PC, Live refuses to start, or rather "kills itself" in an unusual way, right during startup, as follows:
>>>
Runtime Error!
Program:.... Live 5.0.2b6.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
<<<
This error message pops up *immediately* upon attempting to start live, that is, the "splash" window with the logo never gets a chance to display on the screen.
This originally started with the 5.0 demo, then with the 5.0.1 purchased version, now with the beta. The only thing that I can recall having changed on that computer is: 1. I defragged my hard disk and 2. My network connectivity at this exact moment is unavailable. I will try again when the network comes back up to see if live is responding badly to network conditions.
I have this version of live "registered" and "activated" on both my VAIO laptop and my home PC. So far I have not had any of such problems on my home PC. Both of these computers mirror each other in terms of the VST's available and the songs I work on.
This is a very serious problem because it is denying me access to the program that I purchased (since it affects the beta as well as the non-beta installations) and now my most recent songs have become "hostage" of version 5, since they won't load on version 4 anymore.
please help
