Cannot sync two macs over MIDI

So my co-producer and I are trying to sync our mac laptops together using Live five. We used to do this under live 4 all the time but it doesn't seem to work now. We can sync over a wireless network but none of the sync offsets seem to work (in Live and in Audio midi setup). At the moment we created some sync beeps which we play out while synced over wireless and then I offset my master track until the beeps phase, but this is very cumbersome.

Setups are:
1.5gig G4 powerbook x2
OS 10.4.2
Live 5.0.2b?
Live 5.0.1

My midi interfaces:
Midisport 2x2
UC-33e
MOTU Traveller

His Midi Interfaces:
Midisport 2x2
Korg Microcontrol
Echo Audiofire 8

We have r'd the fm many times, tried all combinations of master/slave and different interfaces, changed midi cables, got rid of all other USB peripherals etc, but no luck. If I send clock from Live 5 and he runs Live 4 we sync up right away, with any of these setups. Anybody have any ideas?

Hi smarcan,

could you please explain what exactly does not work?

I far as I understand you, the MIDI clock connection is there, so you can start and stop the MIDI clock master and the MIDI clock slave follows.
But the offset delay from the preferences does not seem to work?

regards,
Alex

Sorry Alex,

We can sync over wireless, but cannot offset midi clock to bring our laptops into time.

Using a midi cable nothing works, I can see midi at both interfaces but the slaved Live will not chase (or even see incoming midi clock). I'm pretty sure I have all my prefs set right.

Hi smart1123,

So with Live 5 as master and Live 4 as slave it work, but not with Live 5 as master and Live 5 as slave.

Please check the MIDI preferences from Live 5. The difference to Live 4 is that you can now setup MIDI sync type for each MIDI input. In Live this was a global setting for all MIDI inputs. In Live 5 you can adjust it for each MIDI input.

Unfortunately the default sync type is set to Timecode for all MIDI inputs.

You should give the latest beta a try. There we fixed and improve several MIDI issues too: http://www.ableton.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=27196

Alex
